Learn how to make an easy, no-fuss guacamole recipe that everyone will love! For years, one of us thought that she hated guacamole. That misconception was due to rancid avocado. It seems that the guacamole which was served during a dinner out was made with avocados that had seen better days. If you have ever tasted a rotten avocado, you know what I mean. Naively, the sour and bitter taste left behind was thought to be the way guacamole tastes, and that was that, for a long while.

Many years later, convinced to try guacamole again, it was a revelation. Guacamole isn’t gross! In fact, it is one of the most delicious things you can scoop up with a tortilla chip, spread on crackers, or eat by the spoonful.

How to make easy guacamole

Making your own guacamole is so easy, there really is no reason not to do it. And there is certainly no reason to buy the prepared stuff they sell at the grocery store. They tend to be expensive, and are often filled with sour cream or other fillers. We like to keep our guacamole simple, adding ingredients only to highlight the delicious texture and flavour of the avocados.

To make our easy guacamole you will need:

  • Avocados – we use 1 1/2 medium sized avocados, or 1 large one. You should have about 1 cup of mashed avocado.
  • Lime juice – freshly squeezed is best. You will need 1/2 a lime for this recipe
  • Cilantro – if you hate cilantro, you can either omit it, or replace with finely chopped parlsey
  • Jalapeno – we add just enough to give a bit of heat. If you prefer your guacamole spicier, add more jalapeno
  • Red onion – finely chopped red onion adds great texture and flavour
  • Garlic powder – a delicious addition
  • Salt – we use 1/4 teaspoon but you can adjust to your taste

As you can see, we keep things simple. We do not add tomatoes (that’s for salsa), sour cream or yogourt to our guacamole.

How can you tell when an avocado is bad?

We really don’t want you to experience rancid avocado. You can read more about how to assess the quality of your avocado here, but here are a few quick points to keep in mind:

  • A ripe avocado has some give when you press it with your finger. It should not be overly soft however, and the skin should not appear wrinkly.
  • The skin may be dark, indicating ripeness. If it is black, it is likely rotten
  • The flesh should not be stringy or have black lines running through it
  • If it tastes or smells off (you’ll know), it is
  • If the surface of your avocado, or the flesh, has white or grey fuzz on it, that is likely mold. Toss it, being careful not to inhale or spread the mold spores anywhere.

Are jalapenos very spicy and hot?

We use a bit of jalapeno in our easy guacamole; just enough to add a bit of heat. Jalapenos are actually not considered a super hot pepper. To keep the heat to a minimum, avoid adding the seeds or the white ribbing on the inside of the pepper to your guacamole. It is best to wash your hands after handling jalapenos; if you don’t and you then touch your eyes it can burn.

How to keep your guacamole from turning brown

Guacamole is so easy to prepare that it is always best to do so right before serving it. Having said that, the lime juice in our recipe will help keep the guacamole from turning brown as it sits. Any guacamole you store in the refrigerator should be covered in plastic wrap. Place the plastic wrap directly on top of the guacamole, to prevent air getting to it.

Why does cilantro taste like soap?

Yup, it actually does for some people. There seems to be some sort of genetic reason why cilantro, loved by some, tastes like soap to others. If you hate cilantro, either because it tastes like soap, or just tastes like cilantro, don’t use it in our recipe. You can either omit it entirely, or swap it out for an equal amount of finely chopped parsley.

How to serve guacamole

The classic partner for guacamole is nacho chips or tortillas, but don’t stop there! You can also serve it with pita wedges, crackers, or vegetables if you want to keep it low carb and gluten free. You can add it to our Greek style nachos, serve it with grilled chicken, and add a dollop of it on your favourite salad for added flavour.

  • avocados, medium or 1 large
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp chopped cilantro see notes below
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped red onion
  • ½ tsp finely chopped jalapeno
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp salt


  • In a medium size bowl mash your avocado using an avocado masher or the back of a fork. You can choose to keep your avocado a little chunky if you prefer.
    1½ avocados, medium
  • Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Enjoy!
    1 tbsp lime juice, 1 tbsp chopped cilantro, 1 tbsp finely chopped red onion, ½ tsp finely chopped jalapeno, ¼ tsp garlic powder, ¼ tsp salt


Note: Nutritional values are for the total amount of guacamole.
If you don't care for cilantro, substitute for equal amounts of chopped fresh parsley.
