What is a Mediterranean diet?
A Mediterranean diet is one which is proven to be healthy; it is more than a diet, it is a way of life for many. It focuses on plant-based foods, and healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil. It includes lots of vegetables, fruits, beans, and fish and poultry instead of red meat.
The Mediterranean diet has many health benefits including lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, supporting a healthy weight, keeping blood sugar and cholesterol low, and possibly minimizing the risk of certain cancers.
Is Greek cooking considered part of the Mediterranean diet?
Yes, it is. Traditional Greek cuisine, with its emphasis on plant-based foods, its limited use of red meat and heavy reliance on olive oil is definitely part of the Mediterranean diet. You can find many additional recipes that support a healthy lifestyle throughout our website, and also here in our compilation of Traditional Greek recipes and our selection of Nistisima (Lenten) Recipes, which are primarily plant-based.
