Melomakarona

Melomakarona are a classic Greek cookie recipe dipped in honey, and topped with crushed walnuts. They are traditionally made during Christmas.

In a large bowl combine some of the ingredients. Mix with the flour, baking powder and baking soda.

Step 1

With your hands, mix everything together. Add the remaining flour. Knead the dough well.

Step 2

Form oval shaped cookies. Flatten slightly.  Place them on a cookie sheet. Using a fork, make indentations on top.

Step 3

Bake for 10 – 15 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown. Remove from oven and cool.

Step 4

Heat your honey in a small saucepan.  Add boiling water. Skim off any foam from the surface.  Reduce heat to a very low simmer.

Step 5

Soak cookies in the saucepan for 40 seconds. Remove and place on a parchment paper.

Step 6

Sprinkle some walnut-sesame seed mixture over the top. Cool. Place individual cookies in cupcake liners

Step 7

- Make the dough and keep it in the fridge. - The honey soaked cookies will keep for several weeks, in a covered container, at room temperature.
