About fasting during Great Lent
Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly (Mathew 6.16–18).

Our 2022 Tyrini (Cheesefare) Week Meal Plan to take you from Cheesefare Monday to Forgiveness Sunday.

Tyrini Week (also known as Cheesefare week – Tyri means cheese in Greek) is the last week of Apokreas or Carnivale before the start of Great Lent, which begins on Kathara Deftera (Clean or Ash Monday). Although all food except for red meat and chicken are permitted during this week, there is a special emphasis on dairy and cheese. This is helpful because it offers an opportunity to use up any products you already have in your refrigerator so that they don’t spoil. It’s also an opportunity to gorge on feta, which is usually sorely missed during Great Lent.

This is most certainly our favourite time of the year. The period of Great Lent which precedes Orthodox Pascha, along with the weeks of Kreatini (Meatfare) and then Tyrini (Cheesefare) which come before it are opportunities for renewal, spiritual growth and a deepening connection with our faith.
The choice on how to live during Great Lent is a personal one. There are certainly “rules” which are dictated by our faith, but situations, contexts, beliefs and capabilities vary and so anyone who is interested discussing their own personal reality is encouraged to speak to their parish priest or spiritual father.

November 15 marks the beginning of the Nativity Fast for Orthodox Christians, a period of fasting which prepares us for the Feast of the Nativity of Christ on December 25th. This is one of four major fast periods observed during the ecclesiastical calendar and although there is an important focus on abstaining from certain drink (wine) and food (meat, dairy, eggs, fish and oil) there is equal emphasis, if not a larger emphasis, on prayer and almsgiving.
Almsgiving is the giving of alms; money and physical gifts offered to the needy or the poor. It is meant to change the giver, encouraging us to detach from physical comforts and excesses, and it reminds us that giving is a social act, which places us in a relationship with others. It is an act of solidarity with those who are struggling, and can be a show of support to those who are facing seemingly insurmountable odds and life challenges.

A meal plan to take you from Kathara Deftera all the way to Pascha!
We are so excited to be able to share with you our Lenten Meal plan! We’ve worked hard to offer you ideas for daily breakfasts, lunches and suppers as well as desserts and snacks. We know that the period of Sarakosti can be busy, sometimes stressful and occasionally overwhelming, and so we hope that our Mia Kouppa Lenten Meal Plan will help lighten the load.
Planning ahead is key to ensuring that you can keep your fast, however you decide to do so. We are not preaching that you fast in any particular way, but are simply offering you a reference tool should you need a bit of inspiration and help.
We’ve tried to make our Lenten Meal Plan as user friendly as possible. Here are a few ways we’ve tried to do so:
- Most recipes have a link which will take you directly to the recipe post. Hover over the name of the menu items which are written in blue and are underlined, and double click to get to the recipe.
- We have taken into account leftovers. So, for example, you may have Yemista one day for supper, and you’ll see that we suggest you have Yemista the next day for lunch.
- We realize that many of you (like us) work during the day, so suggested lunches are items which can be reheated or enjoyed cold or at room temperature.
- Most of our recipes do contain olive oil; this can easily be substituted with another type of oil. If you are abstaining from oil altogether on most days, then it may be a little challenging to use these recipes.
