It can be quite easy to eat well, if you know where to turn! If you are concerned about making healthy food choices, finding recipes that satisfy the less-than-good-for-you-cravings, while still being wholesome, is so important. It’s easy to stick to a healthy diet if you focus on vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins all the time, but let’s face it, sometimes you want ooey, gooey chocolate.

Strawberry rhubarb compote

A delicious sweet and tart compote made from fresh strawberry and rhubarb

Last year we planted rhubarb in the garden for the first time. We were drawn by the idea that rhubarb comes back, year after year. We like that sort of low maintenance growing. We were also excited about using the tart vegetable (more on that later!) in recipes, including desserts and jams. What we didn’t expect was just how much we would love it!

Rhubarb is a funny little thing. Its stalks kind of look like celery, except that they are red, or reddish. Each stalk is topped with a large, flat green leaf that is pretty, but inedible. Rhubarb sold in the market will never have the leaves attached because they are toxic. And although rhubarb is part of so many delicious recipes, don’t plan on having it au naturel. Rhubarb is tart, sour and inedible on its own, but combine it with sugar and strawberries like we do here in our strawberry rhubarb compote and the tartness is a sweet surprise!

A lovely loaf of bread made with roasted red peppers and flavoured with garlic and chives

Baking bread is one of the purest joys of life. Nothing, not a delicious cake or an intricate meal, comes close to eliciting the sense of pride that baking your own bread does. This is funny, because bread making, with the right recipe and attitude, is actually a very simple thing.

Our parents have been baking their own bread for as long as we could remember. At least once a week they will make several loaves of a rustic village bread that they then have for breakfast, with meals (especially delicious with lathera dishes like green beans and potatoes), and which they snack on. They also tend to send a few loaves our way, which is always a welcome surprise.

A Kalamata olive tapenade is the perfect quick and easy meze!

A Kalamata olive tapenade is the perfect quick and easy meze

We literally feel as though we have won the tapenade jackpot! Making an olive tapenade is pretty straightforward, but it can be a bit time consuming when you have to pit the olives yourself. Sure, you can use the canned black olives that taste like plastic if you like; those are usually pitted. But we’re fans of flavour, and great flavour at that so we prefer to make our tapenade with Kalamata olives; the pitting is worth it.

But what if we told you that you could make our amazing tapenade and not have to pit a thing! Wouldn’t that be amazing? It would be! And it is! The MEZE brand of pitted Kalamata sliced olives makes tapenade making a breeze. Simply add all ingredients to a food processor, give it a whiz, and you are good to go. Kalamata olive tapenade makes the easiest and most delicious appetizer!

An open-face sandwich of dandelion greens and grilled bread flavoured with lemon, olive oil, garlic, oregano and feta

Χόρτα με ψωμί στη σχάρα. This post for dandelions greens and grilled bread is really just a composite of two other recipes we have already posted, with some small modifications. Still, we could not not share this recipe, because this open-faced sandwich is one that we grew up on, and it is all sorts of delicious!

The concept here is simple; after dandelions greens are cooked, Greeks like to toss them with a healthy amount of olive oil, fresh lemon juice, and a bit of salt and pepper. Often, that’s it! Sure you can add some dry oregano if you like, but that would usually be the extent of it.

A wholesome apple cake which is vegan, fat-free, and sweetened with maple syrup.

Νηστίσιμη μηλόπιτα. A classic Greek dessert is milopita, a cake loaded with apples that is perfect with a nice Greek coffee, or a tall glass of cold milk. We could have milopita every day of the week, it’s that good! Although our original recipe is great, we do like to have options and so we have come up with an apple cake that can be enjoyed anytime, by almost anyone!

During periods of Orthodox lent, or when we are baking for vegans we love, this vegan apple cake is a sure winner. And its got even more going for it! This vegan cake is full of apples, uses both regular all-purpose and whole wheat flour, it’s sweetened with pure maple syrup and it contains no fat. We often joke that some desserts are healthy because they contain a vegetable (carrot cake anyone?) or a fruit (strawberry shortcake friends?) , but in this case, it’s actually true!

Skordalia; Greek garlic spread

Skordalia, the classic Greek garlic mashed potatoes or potato spread

Is it a puree? Is it mashed potatoes? Is it a spread? We’re not really sure what the best word is to describe skordalia. So, instead of trying to label skordalia, let’s just describe it. This is a recipe that mixes boiled and mashed potatoes with a lot (like, A LOT) of mashed garlic, vinegar and oil. Skordalia is creamy, tangy, definitely garlicky, and one of those recipes that we always think we should make more often.

Cinnamon raisin bread

Cinnamon raisin bread is a slightly sweet and fragrant bread full of raisins

There is a huge debate in our family that revolves around what to call the packaged sliced stuff that you put in a toaster. We won’t get into it here, because we’ve already gotten into it over here – but we were reminded of that post because this cinnamon raisin bread, popped into a toaster, is a thing of beauty.

In testing and re-testing this recipe before publishing it, we’ve learned a few things – we’ve listed those in the Helpful Hints section just below and we hope that they will help you make a perfect loaf of bread. And although bread making tips are important, let’s assume that your bread is baked and ready to eat – here are a few other important things to know.
