Whipped feta dip recipe

This Greek whipped feta dip was always a staple at our big Greek family gatherings! There is nothing tastier than a bowl of feta whipped together with yogourt, a touch of honey, oregano, orange and a pinch of chili flakes for a mild bit of heat. Grab a baguette, or some pita bread, and get to dipping!

Easy and amazing whipped feta dip recipe.

Growing up Greek we always had feta in the fridge and my parents taught me well. Today, if you open up my refrigerator, you will be sure to find feta, and plenty of it. With feta on hand I can always whip up some of my favourite recipes, like Tomato and feta toast, or Feta and fig crostini. Even the freezer comes in handy because I usually have Tyropitakia or Cheese Pies in the freezer, ready to be baked in a moments notice!

Why you will love this recipe

There are so many reasons to love this recipe!

Easy to make

You literally only need to have a small food processor (or a big one) or a blender, and process all ingredients together until smooth. I don’t think anything gets easier than that!

A great combination of flavours

The taste of this dip is just great and is a combination of sweet, tangy, hot and citrusy. There are only a few ingredients, but each one contributes to the great flavour that I just know you will love.

Creamy texture

You can easily scoop or spread this whipped feta dip. It is light and so delicious!

Ingredients you will need

Feta Always use Greek feta which is made with sheep milk or a combination of sheep and goat milk. The flavour cannot be beat and is so much better than feta made with cow milk.

Greek yogourt I use Greek yogourt because it is nice and thick, and has a really creamy and tangy flavour.

Honey Sweetening with honey not only gives a great flavour, but you also avoid any grittiness you might get if you added something like sugar. A little honey goes a long way.

Oregano I almost always use dry Greek oregano. The aroma, and the flavour are incredible.

Orange zest Using orange zest helps release some of the essential orange oil found in the peel and it is a great flavour add in to this dip.

Chili flakes I really like to add a layer of heat to this dip – just a few chili flakes make things interesting!

For garnish

Olive oil As always, here too I use Greek olive oil. A light drizzle over the top of the whipped feta dip is just perfect.

Olives Any olives you use should be pitted so that you can eat them easily. I like to use a variety of olives because it looks pretty, and every bite is a little different.

Fresh herbs There is nothing like fresh herbs to add flavour to a dish. You can use any fresh herbs you have, and that you like. I enjoy using fresh rosemary and thyme, but chives, parsley and even mint would be wonderful.

How to make it

It is so quick and easy to make this recipe!

Instructions

Step 1
You basically simply need to add all the ingredients (except for the ones you will use as a garnish) in the bowl of a food processor or a blender. Process until combined and smooth. Taste when done, and adjust to your liking, adding more honey, oregano or chili flakes as you like.

Step 2
Once done, transfer your dip to a serving bowl and garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, some pitted olives, and fresh herbs.

Cooking tips and helpful hints

How to serve this whipped feta dip recipe

Honestly, this dip is so good you could eat it with a spoon! However, if you want to be more civilized, you need to have something to scoop the dip up with. I love to use toasted baguette, pita bread, crackers or even veggies like carrot sticks and celery. Even raw sliced zucchini or cucumber would be great!

Combine this Greek meze (appetizer) with a delicious cocktail

One of my favourite ways to entertain is Greek-style! Growing up my parents would entertain so often, and regularly instead of making a meal, they would offer guests an array of small bites or meze. This whipped feta dip would be a perfect addition to the table, especially when served with a drink like Ouzo lemonade or Peach and orange Metaxa cocktail.

Double or triple the recipe

If you are planning to serve this to a very large crowd, or want to make extra to have on hand for the week, you can easily double or triple the recipe. Simply increase the individual ingredients proportionally.

Frequently asked questions about whipped feta dip

How long does it take to make this recipe?

Want to know one of my pet peeves? When I look up a recipe and am told that the preparation time is going to be 30 minutes, and 40 minutes later I am still chopping vegetables. I hate that! I am pretty handy in the kitchen, so if it takes me longer than the recipe says it will, I imagine I am not alone. That’s why I try to be generous when I indicate the amount of time something will take.

This whipped feta dip recipe will take you 10 minutes to prepare; that is a true over-statement. It will take you 10 minutes if you factor in the amount of time it will take you to pick your serving bowl, wash your food processor after using it, and gather your children to give it a try. In truth, nothing could be quicker or easier than this recipe. You literally put everything in a food processor, and process until smooth. You don’t even have to add the garnishes if you don’t want to.

Can this dip be made ahead?

For sure. If you are planning ahead you can make this recipe a day or two ahead of serving. Keep it in the refrigerator and add any garnishes to it just before serving.

Recipe variations

You can make this whipped feta dip using grated lemon zest instead of orange zest. You can also add about a teaspoon of lemon juice to really bring out the citrus flavour.

If you prefer not to have any heat, omit the chili flakes.

Instead of olives, olive oil and fresh herbs, you can garnish your whipped feta dip with capers, diced red onion and cracked black pepper. An extra drizzle of honey would also be nice.

Recipe substitutions

You can use regular yogourt instead of Greek yogourt. You may need to use a little less of it (start with 1/2 cup) because it tends to be less thick than Greek yogourt.

I like to use fresh rosemary and thyme to garnish this dip, but you can use any fresh herbs you like (and have on hand).

Storing and keeping

Whipped feta dip will last in the refrigerator, in a sealed container, for up to 5 days. Garnish it just before serving however.
