Pretty in red fruit salad

Pretty in red fruit salad

A perfectly delightful and beautiful fruit salad

Sure, it’s easy enough to grab an apple or a handful of grapes and call it a day, but if you’re looking for a way to really celebrate fresh fruit, we think that a fruit salad is the way to do it.

Fruit salads have endless possibilities, and you can’t really go wrong so long as you remember a few key points.

  • The fruit should be ready to eat. This means that fruit is washed, seeds and any inedible peels should be removed, and the fruit should be cut into bite-size pieces.
  • Your dressing should include some form of acid; either orange, lemon, lime or grapefruit juice are good bets. This will keep your fruit from browning.
  • If you include bananas in your fruit salad (we don’t in this recipe) they should be added last, right before serving.
  • Your fruit salad will keep for a few days in the refrigerator. Prior to serving, toss it again to ensure that the dressing is evenly distributed.
  • We love the addition of cinnamon to our fruit salads. If you prefer you can add some fresh herbs (mint is always a good choice).
  • Have fun with it! This fruit salad has a love and Valentine’s Day theme, hence the preponderance of red. Otherwise, you can add in any fruit that you like.

Fruit salad is so handy to have on hand in the fridge, especially if you have children in the house. It makes for a fun, easy, accessible snack for times when they are feeling peckish. Fruit salad is also a great addition to breakfast or lunch. So, although a plain apple a day will keep the doctor away, a beautiful fruit salad will keep your family coming back for more, every day!

If you would like your fruit salad to have a festive Valentine's Day vibe, cut your strawberries in half lengthwise, cut out a small "v" on the wide end and they will look like hearts.
For the dressing, feel free to substitute the maple syrup for honey and / or the orange juice for either freshly squeezed lemon juice or grapefruit juice.
