Smoothie with orange juice and berries

A simple smoothie made with orange juice, frozen berries and sweetened with a touch of maple syrup. A quick and easy way to start your day, or at any time.

Smoothie with orange juice and berries

Many people turn to smoothies when they are trying to lose weight, or eat healthier, or feel better about the 3 pieces of bougatsa they had the night before. I get it, and that’s okay. But I’m here to tell you that there’s another reason to enjoy smoothies – because they are delicious! And, they are a fun way to get some fruits, veggies and other goodies into people (kids? husbands?) who may otherwise be less inclined to welcome them into their diet.

Why this recipe works

Straightforward and simple

There are so many smoothie recipes out there! If you are a novice smoothie maker, or if you are looking for something simple, which is still delicious, this recipe is for you. It only has a few ingredients, and blends up quick and easy.

Pretty and pink

They say that we eat first with our eyes, and if that is the case, then this recipe is a winner in that department too. Depending on the berries you use, the result will range from a dark red to a pretty pink. So lovely!

Dairy-free and vegan

Unlike many smoothies that have a base of yogourt or milk, this recipe uses orange juice as the liquid. As well, it is sweetened with maple syrup, making this recipe perfect for anyone who is vegan and who abstains from consuming honey. Because there is no dairy in this smoothie, it is also perfect for Orthodox fasting.

Key ingredients

Orange juice If you have freshly squeezed, that’s amazing, however you can use any good quality orange juice you enjoy.

Mixed berries Frozen berries are often sold individually or as a mixed variety. Anything you choose will be fine. My personal favourite is a combination of strawberries and raspberries.

Maple syrup Just a touch is used for a hint of maple goodness.

How to make it

This is so simple, and all it takes is one easy step. combine all of your ingredients in a blender starting with the orange juice, then the maple syrup, and then the frozen berries. Blend well until smooth and combined. Serve immediately for best result.

Helpful hints

Do I have to use frozen fruit to make my smoothie?

I much prefer using frozen fruit because it gives a thicker texture to the smoothie, and of course keeps it nice and cold. An alternative is to use fresh fruit, and then add some ice. Another benefit of using frozen fruit is that you don’t have to worry about it having spoiled – frozen fruit keeps in the freezer for months as long as it is in a freezer safe bag or container.

Can I make my smoothie ahead of time?

The short answer is yes, you can. I don’t really recommend it though. The texture of the smoothie will be best when enjoyed right after it is made.

Recipe variations

As long as you use the quantity of frozen fruit the same, you can really experiment with anything you like. You can move beyond berries to include frozen pineapple, frozen peaches, even frozen kiwi. Almost anything goes!

Instead of using maple syrup you can sweeten your smoothie with honey, agave or even a bit of sugar. Also, you can omit the sweetener all together and rely on the sweetness of the fruit.

Serving size

This recipe makes one smoothie. It can easily be doubled or even tripled, so long as the ingredients fit in the pitcher of your blender.

How to serve

If you are serving this smoothie as part of a nutritious breakfast, considering adding a delicious omelette with feta and sun-dried tomatoes or easy sheet pan eggs and breakfast sandwich. What a great way to start the day!

  3. This was so simple and so very tasty!!! I used half orange juice/half oat milk to cut down on the sugar and ended up adding a few ice cubes at the end to perfect the consistency to my liking.

Absolutely! You may want to add some ice to make it cold and have the texture more like the original recipe. Enjoy! xoxo Helen & Billie
