Cantaloupe frosty with ouzo

Cantaloupe drink with ouzo

Remember last week when we posted about cantaloupe with ouzo, and you hurried off to make that recipe because it sounded so refreshing and delicious?  Aren’t you still pretty amazed by how great those flavours come together? Do you perhaps have some cantaloupe left over, and some ouzo remaining in the bottle? And are you perhaps, a little bit thirsty?

If you answered yes to those questions, boy, do we have a treat for you.  This frosty cantaloupe and ouzo drink is a slushy sensation. Serve it at your next rambunctious get-together, or quiet evening on the porch; this cocktail will make any moment that much more memorable.

Helpful hints
Cantaloupe (and all melons, in fact) should always be washed before cutting into them, despite the fact that you do not eat the peel.  Using running water and a clean brush to scrub your melon can significantly decrease the risk of salmonella contamination.  If you would like to read more, consult this article in the International Journal of Food Microbiology.  It’s fascinating (and horrifying) stuff.

Cantaloupe

This recipe calls for frozen cantaloupe balls.  The best way to freeze most fruit is to lay it in a single layer on a baking tray and then, when each individual piece is frozen, to store them all in a freezer bag.

The quantity of water listed in the recipe is a range; the amount of water you add will depend upon the water content of your cantaloupe.  Start with 2 tablespoons of water, and if the drink is really too thick (and un-blendable), add a bit more.

This drink will be quite frosty and thick; it is meant to be this way.  As the cantaloupe melts, it will get thinner; of course, it will likely already be gone before this happens.

Simple syrup is made by heating together equal parts water and sugar, stirring well, until the sugar melts.  Simple syrup can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator until it is time to use it.  We like to keep a jar handy, for last minute drink preparations.  If you happen to have any rose petals lying around, you can also make rose flavoured simple syrup, like the one used to make rose flavoured lemonade.  That is what we like to use, and is the simple syrup which is used in the photo below (hence the dark colour). This rose flavoured simple syrup can add an extra little bit of fun to your cantaloupe and ouzo drink, but it is not necessary.

You can also use a rose flavoured simple syrup in this recipe. To do so, either add a few drops of rose water to the simple syrup, or boil the sugar and water together with some pesticide free rose petals.

  1. Can I make the syrup?

Hi Mary! Yes, you can make the simple syrup quite easily by combining equal parts water with granulated white sugar. Bring to a boil until sugar dissolves. Allow to cool and it is ready to use. We tend to make a batch of this simple syrup and keep it in the fridge…it will last there for a couple of weeks at least.
